Google Removes 36 Malicious Android Apps from Play Store Infected with Ad Fraud Library

Google has recently removed 36 malicious Android apps from the Play Store, after being alerted to their presence by McAfee. The applications had been updated with harmful functions that could operate without the user's consent. McAfee's research team discovered a software library, named Goldoson, that was capable of collecting information on installed applications, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices, and GPS locations. The library could also perform ad fraud by clicking on ads without the user's permission.

Over 60 apps that utilized the Goldoson library were discovered by McAfee and had over 100 million downloads on Google Play. Google banned 36 of the malicious apps from the store and required that the remaining developers update their apps to reach compliance with Google Play policies.

Apps that have been removed from the store include Infinity Solitaire, Snake Ball Lover, and Compass 9: Smart Compass, while apps such as Money Manager and GOM Player have been updated. Users are advised to check the details of an app before downloading it, including the developer's name, the number of downloads, and comments sections. Proper research can help users identify any potential threats before they download an app onto their Android device.
